Go-To Movies

Go-To+Movies

In a society that revolves around technology as much as our generation today does, movies remain a source of entertainment and comfort for everyone.  For two hours you are about to escape reality and become lost in another world rolling out in front of you.  From animated Disney throwbacks to sappy break-up chick-flicks and predictable romances to Halloween horrors, movies are without a doubt crucial in our times of drama and emotion.  The power of a single DVD can bring the viewer from gaping mouths and wide eyes to a steady stream of tears to hysterical laughter in just one scene.

Movies categorized as sad have been proved to actually make us happier after watching them.  “Tragic stories often focus on themes of eternal love,” said professor Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick.  “This leads viewers to think about their loved ones and count their blessings.”  TheTitanic, Dear John and My Sister’s Keeper are favorites when looking for a heartbreaking and passionate film.

500 Days of Summer is also a popular romance that provokes a sentimental reaction.  “I loved the storyline, and it wasn’t predictable,” said sophomore Sara Boldt.   “Also, the soundtrack was amazing.”

When it comes to chick-flicks, or romantic-comedy expectable movies that only girls enjoy, Safe Haven, Something Borrowed, The Last Song, Clueless, and The Notebook are top choices.  “The Notebook was the only movie I liked better than the book,” said sophomore Daniela Went.  “It’s also an extremely cute story.”

Disney and animated movies will forever hold a small place in everyone’s hearts.  We grew up with the characters as our role models, their dreams our goals, and their lives our fantasies.  It’s impossible to forget them and not enjoy watching old favorites every once in a while.  The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo, Monster’s Inc, Toy Story, Despicable Me, and Up are classics for our generation.

Comedy films are not only impossible not to enjoy, but are also good for your heart, as laughing is more beneficial than jumping with the shock and terror that comes with horror and violent movies.  Many of the favored comedies are loved because of who stars in them as well as the humor.

Pitch Perfect remains a favorite because of the wit, music, and Skylar Austin’s flawless character.  Bridesmaids, The Heat, The Stepbrothers and Superbad are top preferences, along with 21 Jump Street because of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.

With Halloween at the end of this month, there have been numerous “scary” movie marathons on TV.  Whether it’s a Disney classic or actual horror movie, frightening films are necessary thrillers for many high school students.

Halloweentown High, Twitches, and Hocus Pocus are October favorites.  “[Twitches] reminds me of my childhood and how much fun Halloween was,” said sophomore Melia Dion.  The Conjuring and The House at the End of the Street are any day go-to movies when looking to once again become scared of the dark.

Movies are a key part in teenager’s life, especially in the 21st century, due to the stress relief and entertainment that they provide.  These tear-provokers, romances, comedies, and horrors will remain classics and beloved films in the years to come.
