“I am trying to entertain people,” said sophomore Marco-Greco Byrne about his GoPro videos featuring spear-fishing and surfing at Narragansett Beach and Beavertail State Park.

He purchased his GoPro, known as “the world’s most versatile camera,” last January and has been actively using it and producing videos since. “I have always liked making videos and a GoPro seemed to fit what I wanted to film,” he said.

This camera suits Greco-Byrne’s interests, because it is mainly targeted to individuals who are passionate about capturing moments that they would be unable to with a normal camera or iPhone. It is generally used for water and high-action sports.

Greco-Byrne uses his camera for spear-fishing and surfing, and shoots at all hours of the day. He plans out his videos beforehand, according to the song that he plans to use – usually remixes containing a predictable beat, allowing the audience to anticipate both the theme and the next slide.

“I usually time frames on my computer,” he said, “which I’ll either memorize or bring flashcards to help remember how many seconds I need for each frame.”

After filming for four to five hours, Greco-Byrne spends about an hour editing the footage and creating the actual video. He is inspired by Jack Germain, an aspiring 19-year-old filmmaker from Hawaii. “I think that both his videos and lifestyle are really cool,” said Greco-Byrne. “They’re adventurous and carefree.”

Despite Rhode Island’s beauty, he prefers his videos that were filmed in the Caribbean. “I really enjoyed making videos in Puerto Rico because the water was so clear. I could see more tropical fish and the light went to the bottom of the ocean, allowing me to see further and helping the footage to come out clearer.”

He would love to visit Costa Rica, and capture the beauty of its rushing waterfalls, turquoise water, and brilliant sunsets. Pursuing a career in filmography would be a dream for Greco-Byrne. “If I can get a job where I get paid to do what I love, as well as travel the world, that would be ideal.”
