As our society modernizes, it seems that everyone wants the latest and greatest. Whether it be a cell phone, laptop or anything else, if it’s not new, then it’s not good enough for most people. Fashion, however, is currently following the opposite pattern as old styles gain immense popularity.

As North Kingstown students get ready each morning, old fashions provide both style and practicality. The 1990s seem to be a favorite decade among students. Junior Maddie Murdock favors the ‘90s because “of the individuality, range, and variety of styles and trends that came from the decade.”

Variations of the ‘90s are shown with pieces like turtlenecks, flannels, scrunchies, mixed patterns, “Chucks,” and oversized coats and shirts. Junior Ryan Jones is not alone in his preference of “mom/boyfriend jeans, funky sweaters, old flannels, and graphic T’s.” Just one walk through the halls at NK will expose you to such looks.

Denim tends to be a huge standout among students. Jean jackets are seen around the school layered, worn as a denim on denim look or accessorized with patches and pins. Such accessories allow students to express themselves and how they feel each day.

Daily fashion inspiration is drawn from several sources, mainly television. One of the most watched shows among students is Friends, which provides not only comedic relief but fashion inspiration for looks that are a little bit different. Murdock takes inspiration from other movies like 10 Things I Hate About You and Legally Blonde as well.

Styles range all the way from Cher’s classic Clueless-inspired look, a plaid skirt and knee socks, to the more casual, grunge look. Wearing “grunge” is not only the “new thing,” but a practical and comfortable way to dress.

These styles are back on the runway, too! Instead of creating completely new looks, designers themselves have been taking inspiration from past decades. As senior Sydney Pichette said, “when it comes to style, [like] in many aspects of life, things come full-circle.”

The question is then posed about where students get these looks. While many stores offer items in the ‘90s style, Savers tends to be a go to for students. It’s affordable, so people can get more for their money. Also, while thrifting, one can find one-of-a-kind pieces. Other favored stores are The Salvation Army and Urban Outfitters.

Despite the inspiration from ‘90s icons and runways, it has been the general consensus that people dress on a day-to-day basis according to their personality and mood. ‘90s pieces have been the perfect gateway for some students to do so.
