Terrorist attacks around the world
The latest violence around the globe has shocked and disturbed many citizens of the world. The two most recent, Paris and Brussels have people wondering who, what, and where will be next.
On the evening of Friday, November 13th, 2015, bombers and suicide gunmen attacked a concert hall, a major stadium, restaurants, and bars in the city of Paris. These attacks left 130 people dead and hundreds wounded.
This first explosion took place outside the Stade de France, causing the stadium filled with spectators to storm onto the field, wondering where the explosion came from. This explosion was supposed to have taken place inside the stadium, but the man wearing the suicide belt was not able to enter.
As the first explosion was occurring, Paris nightlife was being disturbed by another attack:a shooting on the street Le Carrillon. Another shooting also occurred at this time at the restaurant Le Petit Cambodge where more than 100 bullets were fired. In the following minutes two more shootings happened, and one more bombing at the locations of Rue de la Fontaine au Roi, Rue de Charonne and Boulevard Voltaire.
All of these onslaughts lead up to the final, which took place at the Bataclan music hall. This attack being the most talked about on the news the next morning.
Four months later, another series of attacks happened in Belgium. Two taking place at Brussels airport and at the Maalbeek metro station in Brussels as well. Having killed 30 and injured dozens.
This attack started off as a shooting and lead to bombings in both the stated areas. This caused Brussels airport and Metro Station to close, but just reopened March 22nd since the raid.
Other than the most recent attacks, there have also been many more acts of terrorism since the beginning of 2015, including downing a Russian passenger jet killing 224 people and a bombing in Yeman leaving 130 dead. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for these attacks and many others taking place around the globe.
ISIS has been expanding beyond its base of Iraq and Syria since declaring its own state in June of 2014, causing the threat level of this group to build. “It’s frightening that an organization like this exists and continues to grow” said Darrell Sutton, a history teacher. Stating this terrorist group is the main source of terrorism around the globe nowadays and keeps developing and obtaining followers. The group ISIS branched out of the group Al- Qaeda then being large enough for their own organization.
After declaring state, over 90 terrorist attacks have occurred in locations other than Iraq and Syria killing about 1,400 in total and injuring 2,000. “Targets are less politically based nowadays and are just brutality” said history teacher Christopher Fronce because of the areas these actions are taking place in. Before the caliphate was made, most ISIS and terrorist activity happened within Iraq and Syria for political reasons to expand and develop an Islamic State. After it was developed, these attacks changed and started targeting locations that are random causing not called for tragedies.
Both Fronce and Sutton compared this group and terrorist situations like Yugoslavia and Northern Ireland. Yugoslavia being a war to breakup the country into different republics and Ireland being that which involved and a terrorist group who went by The Troubles in a mostly political battle.
These attacks around the world have been devastating and tragic, yet bringing the world together to join in the war on terror.
