Spring into action

The crack of the bat, the whack of a tennis ball, the polite golf clap, the spike of the ball all signal the sounds of the Spring. For North Kingstown, it also signals the sound of success. NK sports have dominated in the past and do not plan on changing now.

Senior Jake Easter of the boys volleyball team said, “We’re definitely going to surprise other teams. We have a lot of strengths being a mostly senior team.”

The baseball team has their eyes on the prize as they enter the season looking for their tenth consecutive division title.

The girls lacrosse team also has high hopes as Senior Morgan Sherburne said that they have “a strong team this year. We have talented underclassmen as well as strong upperclassmen. I think we will definitely do well in the regular season and hopefully into the playoffs.” NK has a history of doing well in the spring, and, much like every history teacher likes to bring up, history repeats itself.

In the recent past, NK has stepped it up when it comes to their spring sports, bringing in three state championships and eight division titles in the 2014 and 2015 spring season alone. Senior Nick “Moose” Musumeci believes the boys track team has more left in the tank. Moose said “I feel like we’ll do pretty good as a team, but we’ve definitely got some individuals that could make some noise on the state level”.

Many coaches may advise their players to “do all the talking on the field,” and no they do not mean talk smack in between plays. For senior Adam Beliveau, pitcher for the boys baseball team, he agrees with that statement. When asked how he thinks the baseball team will do this year, he replied only with “States.”

After racking up ten consecutive division titles, Beliveau clearly believes it’s time to make the leap to state champions. Junior Zachary Pedroso of boys volleyball also believes the volleyball team has a chance at a state champ title. “We’re gonna surprise people this year, we have a lot of great pieces to fit the puzzle, it’s championship or bust” Pedroso said.

Eleven titles in two years is definitely a great accomplishment, but the NK sports are all thirsty for more. The spring sports include baseball, softball, golf, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, boys track, girls track, boys volleyball, boys tennis and unified basketball. Some see ten sports listed above, but NK sees ten new 2016 State Champion titles.
