Spread kindness around town
The day, not task, began after school as we drove to the Rite Aid parking lot in Wickford to hopefully pass on a smile to the people of the town. We put sticky notes of friendly sayings such as “Don’t worry, be happy” or “You’re perfect” onto random cars in the parking lot. Although we had some confused exchange of looks by passing pedestrians, a simple and friendly anonymous note can brighten anyone’s day.
After leaving Wickford, we headed to Starbucks in North Kingstown and ordered ourselves, of course, a Frappuccino and Latte. Once we got to the register, we spoke to the barista and asked to buy the woman’s coffee behind us. Even if it is a three dollar coffee, it’s the thought and kindness that goes a long way in people’s heart not just their wallet.
Our final destination was to Robert’s Health Care on Ten Rod Road, North Kingstown. Here, we delivered flowers to a randomly picked person at the nursing home. We were directed to a sweet lady, Mary, 96, who was more than excited to accept the flowers to enhance her room as well as have young visitors to share her history and great memories with.
Often times we find ourselves acting selfish in this large world we live in. It is difficult to find time in a day to both help others as well as complete that tasks that you need to. However, although it’s such a large world, a simple small act of kindness can make huge impact on someone’s life. Whether it’s sharing words of positivity, giving flowers to lighten someone’s mood, or buying a coffee for the person behind you are just three of the millions of small acts that you can do to make our community a better place. This experience has helped us realize how important giving can be to not only the people we love, but to the people we haven’t heard there stories just yet.
