Seniors Blamed for Seagulls’ Shenanigans
A trash can filled to the brim with lunch waste from Senior Row.
When the courtyard lies in ruin, with papers and lunch bags strewn about, there is the danger of losing one of the most cherished senior privileges. If the courtyard doesn’t stay clean, the class of 2014 will end up eating lunch in the cafeteria with the underclassmen, a thought that disturbs upper and underclassmen alike.
At the senior assembly at the beginning of the year, Dean of Students, Ms. Rebecca Kane said that if seniors were not respectful of the courtyard privilege it would be taken away, “There’s plenty of room in the cafeteria for you guys,” she said.
If seniors were to be moved back into the cafeteria senior Molly O’Keefe said, “It would be unfair because we have waited four years to able to eat outside. And there’s not a lot of room in the cafeteria.” This was confirmed by sophomores Danielle Garrepy and Abby Dufresne
So why don’t the seniors just keep it clean? Well according to recent graduate, Devin Lane, “It’s the seagulls. They rummage through the garbage cans and pick out the trash.” The seniors aren’t the problem, it’s not even the juniors that sneak in as guests, it’s the seagulls.
Now the question is raised, how do we keep the seagulls from wreaking havoc on the courtyard and the senior’s last year?
“Well, why don’t we just put lids on the trash cans?” senior Jack Hiebner said.
According to Principal Dr. Tom Kenworthy there are lids for the trash bins and they will be put in use shortly. Currently there are two shifts of custodians that work to keep the school clean, the school has just added another shift to take care of the trash for senior row and the courtyard.
“I don’t want to take the the responsibility from the students though,” Kenworthy said. He says that seniors should still take care of their messes after lunch, to respect their privileges.
“We are always thinking of new privileges for the seniors.” Kenworthy said, “If students can think of any other privileges, they should ask. We always take them into consideration.”
So fret not, senior privileges will not be taken away, not due to the seagulls’ mess anyways. But keep it clean, class of 2014.
