Setting up for Success: Unified Volleyball

Bump!  Set!  Spike!  The Unified Volleyball team defeated Pilgrim High School to achieve the Rhode Island’s Division 3 State Champions title.  All their hard work and dedication paid off on Oct 30 as the defeated Pilgrim in a (x-x) game.

After all their time and effort they put into the season, the team made it to the end and came through with a final win.  NKHS has made an effort to include everyone in activities and sports, and the unified volleyball team showcases this.  The team is made up of players and partners that all work together to create a cohesive and hard-working team.

Unified volleyball is a team made up of students, male and female, that and range from freshman to seniors.  This makes the coed team more unique and diverse than most teams in the school.  Out of all the sports offered in the state and North Kingstown High School, unified volleyball is the only coed team.

The team all enjoyed playing together and learning new skills.  Senior Aidan Walsh said,  “My favorite part about unified volleyball was playing volleyball with my friends.”  Throughout the season the team grew to know each other well, which helped them win their state championship title.  Teamwork is important in the sport of volleyball not just on the court but off it as well.

This is Ms.  Tara Harrington’s first year coaching the volleyball team and working with both the players and partners together.  Harrington is an art teacher at NKHS and dedicated her time to the team that eventually paid off.
