“Communion Cups and Someone’s Coat,” Iron and Wine: Samuel Beam, better known by his stage name “Iron and Wine,” is an American singer-songwriter. His songs contain passionate lyrics that mix excellently with the sounds of his guitar strings. This track is simple and concise, but brings powerful emotions of longing and sadness.
“Cats and Dogs,” The Head and the Heart: The Head in the Heart is a an indie folk band that never fails to deliver. With the soulful vocals of Josiah Johnson and Jonathan Russell, this track contains an upbeat folk-infused melody. It’s uplifting beat make it the perfect track to listen to on any occasion.
“Time Will Tell,” Gregory Alan Isakov: Gregory Alan Isakov’s songs convey deep rooted love and despair. This track especially brings forth this message. There is also a certain wisdom to the lyrics and melody. With Isakov’s unique voice and his guitar, the song provides intense feelings of nostalgia and wistfulness. It is everything one could want in a slow song.
“Rivers in Your Mouth,” Ben Howard: Ben Howard has a special and rare talent for infusing empathy and passion into his music in a way that enchants listeners for the duration of seven minute songs. This track opens with a dramatic instrumental that carries on for the duration of the track. Howard’s voice enters and the song immediately intensifies, capturing the attention of those listening.
“Romulus,” Sufjan Stevens: Stevens is an American singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist. His music draws from indie-folk roots and his soulful energy adds to his performance. This track is from his album “Michigan” and contains lyrics that are poetic in nature.
“Comrade,” Volcano Choir: If you are longing for more Bon Iver, just listen to Volcano Choir. Justin Vernon’s vocals continue to bring soul and heart to his listeners, only this time he is joined by members of the band Collections of Colonies of Bees. This track has the perfect build up to it’s deep chorus which provides a catchy tune.
“17,” Youth Lagoon: This track will make you want to go back to those summer days when you were out watching sunsets with your friends, wishing that the day would never end. Youth Lagoon is the stage name for Trevor Powers, whose curious voice evokes wistful and nostalgic emotions. One lyric from the song captures the mood of the song fairly well. “When I was seventeen my mother said to me ‘Don’t stop imagining. The day that you do is the day that you die.’
“Wishing Well,” The Oh Hellos: Opening with the magical voice of Maggie Heath, the song continues to build to its chorus. It continues to slowly pick up pace, until it reaches the climactic moment when a chorus of people joins Heath’s voice. This pattern is characteristic of The Oh Hello’s and it serves the purpose of displaying intense and passionate emotions.
“Son of a Gun,” Lord Huron: Lord Huron is an American indie folk band based in Los Angeles. Their music contains uplifting and passionate melodies mixed with catchy tunes. This track from their album “Lonesome Dreams” is especially addicting.
“Where Is My Mind,” Pixies: The American rock group The Pixies are indie icons who have influenced countless artists over the years. This timeless track is a classic for a reason, containing impassioned vocals and jagged guitar chords.
