NKHS introduces robotics class
It’s been ten years since the original robotics and pre-engineering class was established, but this is the first year it’s back after being cut from the NKHS program.
Recently, the district administration informed NK that they were interested in instituting a career and technology program. NK received funding, which enabled them to create both a robotics class and computer lab.
Mr. Jerome Simmons teaches the introduction to engineering class, Mr. Howie Hague instructs CAD I and CAD II, and Mr. Richard Powell is in charge of Robotics I.
Throughout the course of the semester, the students in robotics class will be learning mechanical design – physically making something better in a more efficient manner. They will also learn computer programming and automation, and design method, which includes fixing and making different items.
Ryan Jones, freshman, was attracted to this class because he wanted to have “a fun and new experience, and develop skills in robotics.” Even though his best subject is math, he isn’t sure if he can see himself doing something in this field, but is keeping it as a possibility. Jones is most excited to receive a better understanding of engineering and science.
One purpose of the robotics class is to help those who may not want to go to college, but instead straight into the workforce. Adding this class to their high school resume enables them to graduate with a diploma that will allow them to do that.
“The goal is to prepare kids who want to pursue careers in engineering or manufacturing and to have the opportunity to [expose] them to basic skills,” Powell said.
