Hallway Mural Makes its Mark
NKHS students stop and stare at the wall, not just a plain wall, though. At the beginning of last year, seniors Kaela Kennedy, Hannah Blackwood, and their friends spent most afternoons from December to June painting a mural on the wall in the first floor hallway across from the bubbler.
The design originated from a doodle Kennedy drew on notebook paper during class discussions. The mural is an enlarged¸ freehanded version of the original.
Kennedy and Blackwood worked with the Art Department’s Mrs. Janice Strain in order to share Kennedy’s vision with the entire school. The mural is a design that looks similar to a mandala. Inside the swirling lines are vibrant colors traced in edgy black.
The creators are proud of the artwork and “are pretty excited by the way it came out,” said Kennedy.
Many students stop for a moment as they are passing through the hallway to admire the décor. “It was cool to see how surprised people were to suddenly see it finished,” said Kennedy because throughout most of the process she had kept it hidden.
“I just stop and stare at the mural every time I pass it, thinking about what it means to solve world peace,” said senior Erik Franklin- Silva. It is not uncommon to sit on the bench opposite the mural and let the time pass. Silva said “time flies when I am watching the mural because I always find a something new to look at.”
