Going pro with the GoPro

Morgan Sherburne

Sherburne captured these caverns on a trip she took to Bermuda. It was her favorite place to film.

The World’s Most Versatile Camera” has made creator Nicholas Woodman one of the most successful people of our generation. His creation, the GoPro, is an American brand of high-definition cameras used mainly for video photography. It is often used to capture extreme situations because of its durability, small size, and weight. The camera can also be utilized under water, and it mounts to unique places such as boats, surfboards, cars, etc.

With programs such as Instagram and Vimeo, people can share videos they make. This enables anyone to post their creations. It also inspires other people to go out and film their own videos. Morgan Sherburne, a junior was inspired this way. “I saw professionals using it and thought it was really cool and something I could use myself,” she said The camera is not difficult to use and its price is not nearly as expensive as some other cameras used for similar purposes.

Originally intended to film surfing, the ways in which people utilize the GoPro have vastly expanded. Sherburne explains that most of the time when she films it is spontaneous. However, if she knows she wants her video to go with a certain song, she will try and get shots that would go with it.

Music plays a large role in GoPro videos. With different editing software such as iMovie or the GoPro studio, most people choose to put their video clips together to go with a specific song. This adds to the mood of the video. Sherburne often uses remixes in her films. The fast paced style of the songs fit together perfectly with her clips. “What I love most about filming is when you get the perfect flow between the the video edit and the song,” she said.

Sherburne explains that editing the clips together takes a decent amound of time. “For a 15 second video I can spend over an hour.” Fifteen seconds is the amount of time Instagram allows for videos. Many people who create their own films often make certain videos specifically to post. Other times they make much longer edits, but this is a time consuming project. She explains that she has some final edits that are longer, so if she really likes a certain clip she will decide to post that.

Sherburne dreams of seeing California and Hawaii captured through the lens of her camera someday. “I love filming and I like having something that will push me to do interesting things.”
