Chocolate Crack on a Couch: A “Hole in the Wall” Approach to Valentine’s Day
Looking for a place to spend this Valentine’s Day that’s a tad bit off the beaten path? Take the trek up to Providence to check out these sites- I promise you, it’ll definitely be worth the ride.
If you’re someone who enjoys wonderfully unhealthy food, a casual atmosphere, and doesn’t mind eating meat wrapped in paper, you’ve absolutely got to venture over to Harry’s Burgers (located at 121 N. Main St., Providence).
Though not the most upscale eatery, Harry’s is the perfect place to relax if you’re looking for a more low-key Valentine’s Day outing. Generally, reservations at Harry’s aren’t required, but the place does tend to fill up quickly, so plan your trip accordingly.
Harry’s features miniscule, delectable burgers (and a veggie burger option) which are served as sliders. Their masterpieces vary in type from a classic bacon-cheeseburger to the “Mother of All Burgers”, which comes with fried onion rings built into the burger’s complexion.
Make sure to leave room for dessert, though, because Harry’s menu also features a Twinkie Milkshake and their specialty dessert, which they entitled “Chocolate Crack”- a saltine, chocolate, and caramel combo which is every bit as addicting as its name implies.
After you’ve munched your way into a meat-induced coma and discovered a potential need for food-rehab, the perfect place to unwind is just up the street at the Cable Car Cinema (located at 204 S. Main St., Providence).
This quaint, one-theatre movie house has been around for decades, but hasn’t lost its touch or reputation as one of the city’s best indie theatres, showcasing quality entertainment.
The Cable Car isn’t your average cinema; instead of chairs, the theatre is furnished with couches, which are perfect for sharing- or, if you’re enjoying the singular lifestyle, sprawling out and enjoying the space.
Despite its miniscule size, the Cable Car features a standard movie screen and coffee bar, where anything from hot chocolate to grilled cheeses are available…although, after Harry’s, you might want to pass up on the sandwich offerings.
The Cable Car is notorious for showing films which wouldn’t normally be found in theatres, as well as foreign works (with subtitles, of course!), and is currently showing The Dallas Buyers Club¸ starring Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto; and a wonderfully entitled The Great Beauty. Show times and contact information are available on the Cable Car’s website, www.cablecarcinema.com.
