Can social media be a tool for learning and growth?

Charlotte Connerton, Opinion Editor

People in this day and age use social media apps like Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and Facebook daily to post pictures and update others on their life. But social media can also be used to inform and educate people to help them understand people’s ideas, beliefs, and current events. As social media has increased credibility over the years, it should now be considered as a main source of news and to some people, it already has. It is and should always be a way for people to spread information and ideas across the world just by the tap of a screen.

People around the world want the inside scoop on what is happening in other countries or places to be aware and educated. However, newspapers nowadays do not get around as much, and we have so much more time to pick up our phones throughout the day than to sit down for hours watching the news. Social media is an easier, quicker way to get the information you want to know rather than basic and boring things everyone may not care about depending on what information you are looking for.

Social media platforms are so powerful that people across all ages use the apps. Pre-teens to the elderly are posting and reading others’ posts on the apps. Clearly we have different points of view on widely argued topics if there is that wide of an age group with different opinions.

To be fair, not everyone on these platforms are the warmest, nicest people when there is someone who is different or thinks differently than them. However, despite that, it is so important and vital that people still spread their ideas to get different views on things. And sometimes different opinions are the better opinions, anyway. Take the recent election, for example: people have some completely different ideas about politics; it is one of the most highly-debated topics of all time. Sure, the election was broadcast on the news, but most of the information people got was from those social platforms, as they should. In addition, it is also so much easier to get different points on things and have conversations on things on social media as it is so different from any other platforms.

Social media is already widely used across the world already. Yet instead of just posting photos and captions, we as a community can discuss recent events and opinions on these platforms. We should continue to talk and debate about all the ongoing issues and news going on in the world at this time. It is important to stay updated and stay educated in the easiest way possible.
