Steinweh encourages English Language Learners

Regina Williams Culebro, Staff writer

Anke Steinweh is one of the new teachers at NKHS. She is a mother of three kids: Lily (24), who lives in LA, Julia (22), who goes to college in Rexburg, and Jonnah (19), her baby and the crazy one. Her husband Steve is from Providence and works at Thales.

A yoga and ocean lover, she enjoys cooking vegetarian food, playing tennis and taking care of her garden, loves animals, had chickens and a cat named Wilson.

She grew up in northwest Germany and worked in Jamestown and North Providence. She studied English and psychology at Rhode Island College.

She loves traveling with her family and as a birthday tradition they all go to the beach. She went to Canada and traveled all over Europe to countries like Scandinavia, England, Spain and Italy. She lived in an RV (recreational vehicle) and traveled across the country with her family.

Her favorite subject when she was a student was literature, “because I love reading and learning about people,” she said. Her favorite authors are Toni Morrison and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

She didn’t always think of being a teacher, she wanted to be a psychologist but decided to become a teacher after seeing that she did a good job with her children. She thought that she would be good at teaching so she took courses in English as a second language and decided to stay in that field. And now she has been teaching for ten years.

She is a nice teacher and really loves encouraging students at her work. “I want to be useful and help kids realize things aren’t difficult,” she said, adding that is the thing she loves the most about teaching.
