Andrews’ achievements honored with High School Heisman award

Captains Sarah Andrews and Jennifer Roth, junior, enjoy senior night, which was in October.

The lights glisten gold as a proud applause drowns out the congratulatory speech given to senior Sarah Andrews as she approaches the NKHS stage. A finalist for Wendy’s High School Heisman, Andrews is engulfed in the hugs of her family members as a television crew pans around the milestone moment.

Since 1994 Wendy’s High School Heisman Program has honored over 395,000 high school students who excel in learning, performing, leadership in the classroom, field, and community. Andrews has dedicated her time to such academics, clubs, and community service. “I play soccer and swim, I am a member of jazz band and VAASA, and I volunteer with a number of organizations,” said Andrews. Her diverse schedule and the ability to manage her time successfully has helped Andrews to excel in everything she does.

“[Wendy’s High School Heisman] hasn’t been a goal of mine in particular, but it’s nice to be recognized for my achievements,” said Andrews. Although her impressive amount of club memberships and dedication to academics have helped her to become a finalist, it is her passion for what she does that has allowed for such success.

“Doing the activities is something I enjoy whether or not I get recognized for it. I love doing these activities and services, so it’s not stressful work for me; it’s enjoyable,” said Andrews.

In December, she will travel to New York City with the other finalists. Once there, Wendy’s selects the National High School Heisman Winner and it will be broadcast on the ESPN networks. “Having the opportunity to travel to NYC and spend the weekend with lots of other outgoing students will be super fun,” said Andrews.

“I would say just do whatever you are passionate about,” Andrews said. “Doing what you love will make you happy in everyday life, and others will see that you’re following your passions and support that.”
