“The “How I Met Your Mother” series finale continues to cause controversy among fans. However, many viewers can agree on one thing that HIMYM got right in their ending: the song choice. The beloved nine season, comedic television show always has a knack for picking excellent music. Whether Barney is singing about suits, Robin “Sparkles” building sandcastles in the sand, or Ted pouring his heart out, the song selection always matches the mood perfectly. This legendary playlist includes only 10 songs, but it is sure to supply HIMYM fans with a feeling of nostalgia. It will also provide excellent song and artist suggestions to anyone who enjoys listening to music.
1. “This Modern Love” Bloc Party Taken from their debut album, “Silent Alarm”, this song gives a pop/rock/alternative vibe while also expressing the unique sound that is Bloc Party. The crescendo in the middle of the song completely alters the mood and is one of the reasons “This Modern Love” is so elusive. (Can’t help but picture stormy weather while listening to this one… And a man dancing on a roof.. ) Alt Rock Season 1 Episode 22
2. “Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect” The Decemberists From the 2002 record “Castaways and Cutouts”, this song is infused with wistful lyrics that provide nostalgic emotions to the listener. 3. “I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)” The Proclaimers It is the most popular song by the Scottish band composed of identical twin brothers, Charlie and Craig Reid. Its upbeat tune and catchy beat make it the iconic song it is today. After hearing it once, it’s hard not to sing along. (Perfect for road trips…)Folk/Rock Season 2 Episode 17
4. “Two Weeks” Grizzly Bear From the Brooklyn-based indie rock group, “Two Weeks” is the first single from the band’s third album, “Veckatimest”. The steady beat provides a calming mood. Vocals echoing throughout the song convey a slight twist from average indie rock music. I would take this window of opportunity to check out this song. Indie Rock Season 5 Episode 10
5. “Shake it Out” Florence and the Machine Released as the first single from their second studio album, “Ceremonials”, “Shake it Out” is praised for its vivid use of imagery. It is infused with soul and gospel while also carrying out a baroque pop and art rock feel. The song plays in one of the closing scenes of HIMYM’s seventh season and is a favorite moment among fans. 6. “The Funeral” Band of Horses This is the first single taken from Band of Horses debut album, “Everything All The Time”, released March 21, 2006. The song starts off slowly with soft instrumentals, building up to the chorus of “At every occasion I’ll be ready for a funeral.” The crescendos during this song help to express the emotion embedded in the lyrics. 7. “Let Your Heart Hold Fast” Fort Atlantic Formed by Jon Black in 2010, Black began recording songs in a home studio, collaborating with drummer Josh Cannon. “Let Your Heart Hold Fast” is one of the band’s EPs released in 2010-11. With an indie/pop/folk sound, their music is fitting for any occasion. This song in particular gives a serene vibe. Indie Folk Season 8 Episode 11
8. “Rivers and Roads” The Head and the Heart Appearing on their first studio album released April 19, 2011, “Rivers and Roads” has become one of the bands greatest hits. Holding a steady beat throughout, the different sounds from the violin, drums, piano, or flat out vocals offer a brilliant collaboration of sounds. Indie Folk Season 8 Episode 16
9. “Simple Song” The Shins From their fourth studio album, “Port Of Morrow”, “Simple Song” provides soulful lyrics that captivate the listener. It acquires a calming beat and harmonious melody. The song gained widespread fame when it was used in a pivotal moment of HIMYM. “One ticket to Farhampton!” Indie Rock Season 8 Episode 24
10. “Heaven” The Walkmen Alas! The final song on the legendary playlist and the final song played on HIMYM. “Heaven” carries an upbeat tone that remains constant throughout the song.
