The Legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Franceska Lucaj, Editor-in-Chief

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, accomplished and paved many paths for women during her lifetime. She was nominated to serve by former President Bill Clinton, and did so from 1993 to her death in 2020.  Prior to being nominated, she famously fought valiantly against gender discrimination.

With her recent passing on September 18, it is only appropriate to discuss the way Justice Ginsburg changed the future for women. She worked tirelessly to erase the line between men and women in order to provide each gender with equal opportunities.

After going to law school, Ginsburg saw the great amount of discrimination against women, as well as the alarming  amount of opportunities females would not receive on the basis of their gender. This pushed her to open many doors.

Because of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, women have the ability to own credit cards, lease apartments, and buy property in their name. Women, if you have ever consented to your own medical treatment, if you have played a sport in school, you can thank Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Ginsburg was a true hero in our time and her legacy will never be forgotten. She fought for equity on and off the bench. She created opportunities for the underrepresented that were unfathomable to previous generations, and she did so until her last breath.

Rest in peace and thank you for opening so many doors for women. Now it is up to future generations to continue the legacy of social justice reform that you have so bravely pioneered throughout your entire life.
