Mr. Angel Silverio may be the only person at the school who likes the early morning start time.
According to Silverio, “My day starts pretty early. I wake up, I work out.” All before he makes the drive from North Providence to North Kingstown. Luckily, he is a morning person.
The schedule is actually a big reason that he decided to leave his position in Providence for the one here. “I’m attracted to the schedule. We start early, and we end early,” he said.
Currently, Silverio is a math and careers teacher. He spends most of his day moving, even after he’s wrapped up a session at the gym. He drives to school, moves from classroom to classroom to teach, and then might drive his nephew to basketball practice.
In class, he darts from student to student as they ask him questions.
Mr. Silverio, can I go to my locker? “Yes.”
Mr. Silverio, should I include photos in my slideshow? “Check Canvas.”
Mr. Silverio, can I use the bathroom? “Make a pass.”
He seamlessly maintains multiple conversations at once, trying to answer every question his students ask and help all of them complete an assignment.
“I like helping people,” Silverio said. It was his passion for helping others that took him to Providence College for his degrees in math and teaching.
Silverio knows that math isn’t everybody’s favorite subject. “ I tell them all the time,” he said, “it’s like – you don’t like paying bills, but you have to pay the bills.” However, he tries to make his class relevant and useful to every student. “So, sometimes, it’s just transferring the information. It’s like, ‘here’s your information, use it as you will.’”
