Seniors face senioritis
May 31, 2016
As the days get longer, the weather hotter, and with graduation date right around the corner, seniors are experiencing seniorirtis. Senioritis is a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance. This includes a decrease in attendance, which affects not only the student body, but the deans as well. Another crucial factor which contributes to senioritis is the ability to sign out whenever, if you are eighteen.
According to the records, there has been a huge decrease in attendance this year alone. There has been such a big decrease in attendance that the deans had to
change the rules of the eighteen year-old sign out rule.
Originally it was if a student was eighteen, they were able to sign out whenever and how many times they wanted. However, because attendance was drastically
dropping, the deans had to alter the rule immensely. The current rule is now a student who is eighteen can only sign out three times per quarter to minimize chronic absenteeism. Dean, Mr. Clarke said, “It’s true. Attendance has increasingly dropped
and a major factor is the 18 rule, which is why we altered it.”
The large student body of seniors who are eighteen and were affected by this rule change spoke out. Senior, Kate Thomas said,
“It’s really hard to stay and come to school, especially because all of work is done and the weather is getting so nice.” Many believe that because of all the hard work they’ve put in for the past three years, it’s acceptable to relax and “lay back” for the remainder of the school year, especially as the days are beginning to get warmer.
Senior, Katherine Mancieri said, “I’d much rather be at the beach as the weather is getting hot than inside all day in classrooms for all electives.” Many students have the same mentality at this point in the year.
Senioritis is directly affected by seniors who feel they are done and completed with high school and wish to enjoy the warm days left with their friends. However, it’s crucial that the class as a whole keep in mind the main goal, graduation and go to school periodically to reach this goal
