North Kingstown High School has some of the best overall sports teams in the state of Rhode Island. Most of the sports in the school are Division I where these athletes are competing at the highest level possible. The reason for every sport being so good alongside great coaching is due to the school being massive, schooling very many students. With all these student-athletes all varying in the sports they play, they are destined to have many solid teams.
A concern that comes up is if the students who watch and hear about the sports teams actually care if they have great or weak teams. Now, this isn’t just a problem at the high school level; children, teens, and adults seem to be trending in the direction of not caring too much about the sports teams local to them or even the big shows like the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc. To answer the question, at NKHS the students do care how good their teams are and take true pride in having an overall great school. When taking a deeper look, you can see that it is the student-athletes who care the most as they work hard to earn the respect they deserve. They know they have to live up to these expectations that have been put in place by their teams in the past. In short, there is true pride taken in the sports by both the students and the athletes.
The best sports in the school have been at the top for a long time. Each season for the most part, the football, baseball, and soccer teams are in championship contention. These teams always have great records, resulting in playoff success. In the 2024-25 season so far, the varsity boys soccer team lost in the semifinal, the girls soccer team won the Division I championship, the football team won the district championship, and the baseball team still has their season to undergo. Other sports in the school such as the wrestling team are in rebuild years. North Kingstown wrestling is Division I as well, and this year are a young team with much potential. The roster is dominated by over 20 freshmen, with a promising junior class to look up to. Currently, there are only two seniors on the team, making it hard for the younger kids to model after. Time will only tell how this team will do in the future and if they put in the required hard work necessary.
Due to North Kingstown having such great sports, coaches and athletes want to come and play for these teams. With CTE programs, students are able to come to North Kingstown regardless of where they live and experience these programs while also being able to compete on the sports teams. This is a major deal because great athletes who want to win can come to NK and become better with great coaching and win the titles they desire if the hours are put in. With the CTE programs, the population of NKHS also increases with the sports teams getting better with these athletes coming to the school.
In conclusion, North Kingstown has some of the best sports alongside schooling in the state of Rhode Island among public schools. The best athletes choose to go to overpriced private schools that are in competition with North Kingstown, further proving that N.K is the better option. We also know that the students and athletes take pride in having their great teams and school, something that other schools might not have.
