The widely-known “Blue Album” by alternative rock band Weezer was released on May 10, 1994. The album was an instant success. Thirty years later, in 2024, the band went on a tour around North America to celebrate. This tour lasted from Sept. 4 to Oct. 12. I was lucky to see them at TD Garden in Boston on Sept. 10.
Weezer had two bands open for them: Dinosaur Jr. and The Flaming Lips. Both bands were formed in the ‘80s.
Dinosaur Jr. was the first band to perform. Formed in Amherst, Mass., their songs are described as rock. I wasn’t expecting much, as my prior research on the band didn’t exactly make them sound good. This was confirmed at the concert; their performance was full of excessive feedback and distortion. Needless to say, their set gave me a headache, and I stepped away from my seat and walked around through most of it.
TD Garden is a wonderful venue. It seems like there aren’t any particularly bad seats. There are plenty of bathrooms and concessions throughout. Plus, if you’re looking to stay overnight, there are plenty of hotels around. Our hotel was five minutes away.
The next band to play was The Flaming Lips. Described as psychedelic rock, I was intrigued. Their performance was unique! I had never listened to psychedelic rock before and didn’t necessarily hate it. It’s not something I’d actively look for when listening to music, but I wouldn’t skip it if it played in my playlist.
The merchandise at the concert was certainly not cheap. A t-shirt was $45. However, I bought two from Weezer and one from The Flaming Lips.
At last, Weezer was up to play. Their concert did something that I had never seen before: a story. The tour followed Weezer as they were sent to outer space to save the fictional “Blue Planet,” which was dying. The entire idea was dorky, but entertaining nonetheless.
This being my third Weezer concert, I had high expectations. And, as always, they were met. There was even a mosh pit during the concert at one point. Lead singer Rivers Cuomo commented, “Never in 30 years have I seen a mosh pit during ‘Only In Dreams’!”
Overall, the concert was fantastic. It was a wonderful night, and I plan to see them again.
