A passion for teaching: Crosby shares parallels with Portsmouth
November 4, 2022
When asked if she would pursue a career other than teaching, new math teacher Ms. Katie Crosby said, ”Other jobs wouldn’t give me that opportunity to constantly change.” Living in Southern Rhode Island her entire life with her family, going to the University of Rhode Island was an easy decision.
However, college brought her to new, unexpected opportunities. Crosby initially intended on becoming a civil engineer, but she discovered that she wanted to use her mathematical skills in other ways.
“In college I realized that I liked math, I made those connections…It clicked with me, it was like all those things (math from high school) came together,” said Crosby. She changed from studying engineering to studying secondary education because she saw teaching as more exciting.
What draws Crosby to teaching is the fact that there is constant change; every year there are new students, new opportunities, and policies to adjust to. She wouldn’t want to be stuck in a mundane 9 to 5.
Crosby has been teaching high school math for 19 years. She started at Portsmouth High School–one of the best public schools in RI — and taught at Narragansett before coming to North Kingstown. After working at locker-less Portsmouth, Crosby enjoys the convenience of lockers here at NK. Crosby finds the school extremely welcoming as a new teacher and says that everyone is very helpful. However, moving schools can be difficult when you have to grow accustomed to the new school culture and policies.
In her free time, Crosby is very active, enjoying things like hiking, running and rock climbing. She also greatly enjoys reading and socializing with her friends. Additionally, she has a seven-year-old son named Rowan she is raising here in her life-long home of Rhode Island. She stays in this state because all of her friends and family are here, but if she could live anywhere she would live in the mountains (as long as she could bring her friends and family with her).
