Covid leaves students confused with college applications

Taylor Mooney, Staff Writer

Applying to colleges has always been stressful, but this year with Covid-19 it can be even more difficult. Not knowing where to start the application process, or even what colleges to look at. The application process is a bit easier now, through the common app. With the Common App, you can write your college essays, make sure your SAT scores are sent to four of your college choices for free, and send your college applications to whichever college you choose.

Some colleges are now test optional, meaning they are not requiring SAT scores due to Covid-19. Do your research on the colleges you are considering sending your scores. The guidance counselors at NKHS are always willing to help with your college application process. They have resources available through the Post Secondary Planning. Mrs. Toro, a guidance counselor at NKHS, suggested attending the virtual college visits here at NKHS.  “Do not wait until the last minute to complete your application.” said Toro. Which is important, you do not wait to rush your college application process. “Some colleges have extended admission deadlines, I’ve also seen them waive the application fee.” said guidance counselor Mancini. Due to Covid-19, many families are out of jobs, and colleges get that. Colleges that have gone test optional are still looking for essays, as the admissions officers read them, and it is a way for them to get to know you better.

The stress levels added to the process have now risen even more. As if it weren’t hard enough to apply to colleges, this new obstacle of Covid-19 adds an extra roadblock to the students trying to get it done. Although some changes have been made as to what colleges require, students now need to do even more research to find out where to further their academic careers. Although Covid has added to the stress load, and has made the process of applying more difficult, some things have stayed the same. Guidance, along with the school, are all working with students to help them get through it as a team. Councillors and staff are there to help us through these trying times.
